Hill Country Anniversary Trip

Quin and I celebrated our 52nd anniversary on June 11.

So on Friday the 9th we packed the car and headed for the Hill Country( with a playlist of Texas artist for inspiration). To quote Pat Green “ baby needs a little hill country. Billboards and bullshit has got her down”

Our first stop was in Comfort Tx. Last summer when we were there we stayed at the Hotel Giles ( www.hotelgiles.com). It’s a lovely little boutique hotel with about 15 rooms. Just be aware that it is contactless check in and there are no bellmen to help with luggage. We made sure to book a ground floor room. We had a wonderful stay, breakfast is included and we enjoyed it. We looked forward to coming back to explore the town( we were there for a party in Fredericksburg )

We had decided this time to stay at a pretty little inn we spotted on our last trip. Meyer Inn on Cedar Creek (themeyerhotel.com) in Comfort. We thought the Inn was lovely and our room is spacious and the bed was very comfortable ( the older I get the more important that is)My only complaint about the inn was in their description of your room it doesn’t note if the room is upstairs or down. We preferred down stairs as not to have to carry our bags up ourselves.

Still we did enjoy our stay.

My disappointment was the town of Comfort itself.Or maybe to be more fair, in our expectations of the town. The last time we were there it seemed to be bustling with people going in and out of shops on Front Street. The bar across the street from where we stayed previously had music and a lively crowd. On a Friday night ( this trip) we had to search for a restaurant open for dinner. Or settle for fast food! And by that time it’s was too late to get reservations in either Fredericksburg or Boerne.

Saturday night we made reservations at “The Creek” (thecreekrestaurant.com ) in Boerne about twenty minutes away. The food was wonderful, the view of the creek lovely and the service was exceptional. We will definitely make a return visit to that restaurant.

On Sunday we checked out of the Inn and drove into Fredericksburg to have lunch with our dear friends the Colvins who live in Fredericksburg. Sunday lunch at Vaudeville (www.vaudeville-living.com) is a YES. ( make reservations in advance). Their fried chicken on Sunday is a treat not to be missed. Book your reservation for early in the day as they will run out of chicken.

This trip had three goals 1) relax and have some time to enjoy each others company 2) spend time in the Hill Country which is just good for us both 3) to see some friends we needed to hug.

Our lunch with Ruth and Stacy did that even though it wasn’t long enough ( but it never is).

Leaving Fredericksburg we pointed the car toward San Antonio. Two of Drew’s friends had just recently moved there and have a new baby boy. Getting to share the excitement of a new baby and hug the necks of people who loved Drew almost as much as we do is always bittersweet but I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

Leaving the Hayes we checked into our hotel for the night. It has been about 6 years since we stayed there and it has been beautifully remodeled. More about Hotel Valencia ( hotelvalencia-riverwalk.com)in another post. I have a lot to say about how well that stay went!

Sunday night we had dinner with another old, dear, crazy friend. In our 30’s we camped with and floated the Guadalupe River as often as possible together. He and Quin are polar opposites and the very best of friends. I think we both needed a Dennis fix.

Monday morning we had a wonderful breakfast at the hotel and pointed the car for home. As much as I love traveling and seeing friends I do love being in my little space.

Embrace this season of life and go! See the people and places you love!

XOXO
